Sony Open Tennis 2013: David Ferrer, Andy Murray to face off in finals

On Sunday, the ATP Singles finals of the 2013 Sony Open will take place, as No. 2 seed Andy Murray takes on No. 3 seed David Ferrer. The No. 1 seed, Novak Djokovic, was eliminated earlier in the tournament by Tommy Haas, who Ferrer bested in the semifinals.

Ferrer took down Haas, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3, out-lasting the 34-year-old late in the third despite being down 3-1 in that set. Murray struggled with his semifinal matchup initially, losing the first set to, but ultimately beating No. 8 seed Richard Gasquet, 6-7 (7-3), 6-1, 6-2.

Murray is favored to win the matchup, having won five of the last seven meetings with Ferrer, witth a 6-5 mark overall against him. His record is even better when it comes to non-clay surfaces, as Ferrer has only won once against Murray in such an instance, in 2011.

On paper though, Ferrer’s style always has seemed to match up well with Murray. They play a similar defensive game, and Ferrer seems to have the edge in that area when the two play, but somehow Murray always ends up on top. Ferrer is a game opponent, taking out arguably tougher competition thus far in the tournament and posting a 23-4 record this season, with losses to Rafael Nadal and the aforementioned Djokovic.

Either way, it should be an exciting matchup between two of the absolute best in the sport right now. The match is set for 11:30 a.m. ET and can be watched on CBS on Sunday.
