Day four of the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells is winding down, and we had our first significant upset of the tournament. Round two of the ATP Men’s Singles got underway and No. 4 David Ferrer took on unseeded Kevin Anderson. Ferrer was coming off a bye while Anderson was coming off an opening round victory over Victor Hanescu.

David Ferrer was eliminated in round two of the BNP Paribas Open, and No. 5 Rafael Nadal managed a successful return to the hard court with a victory over Ryan Harrison.

Perhaps Ferrer was a bit rusty, but he just couldn’t handle Anderson’s power. Ferrer, the world No. 4, lost by scores of 3-6, 6-4, 6-3. Anderson wrapped up his win in just under two hours. He broke Ferrer’s serve once in the second set and twice in the third. It’s a big win for Anderson, who will face Jarkko Nieminen in the next round.
Nieminen bested No. 29 Fernando Verdasco on the day to earn the shot at Anderson.
No. 5 Rafael Nadal made his hard court comeback against un-seeded Ryan Harrison on Saturday, as well. Nadal has dealt with very significant injury issues over the last year (and really, his entire career), and at one point, his ability to actually continue in the sport was questioned.
But Nadal made his comeback successful on Saturday. He got off to a slow start and was forced into a tiebreak in the opening set, but ultimately, he was able to pull out the victory in said set for a final score of 7-6(3), 6-2. He picked up the pace in the second set, earning a double break and cruising to victory.
