Novak Djokovic injury: Tennis star hurts ankle, needs MRI

The world’s top player twisted his ankle while playing against Sam Querrey on Sunday. How bad is the injury looking in the aftermath of Djokovic’s win?

Susan Mullane-USA TODAY Sports

Novak Djokovic suffered an ankle injury in a Davis Cup quarterfinal against Sam Querrey Sunday in Boise, Idaho. After twisting his ankle in the third game of the match, the No. 1-ranked player managed to finish with a win at Taco Bell Arena, ousting Querrey 7-5, 6-7(4), 6-1, 6-0.

Djokovic took anti-inflammatory pills after the match and was walking around with right ankle wrapped. He will travel home to Monte Carlo to undergo an MRI.

His comments concerning his ankle were not positive in postmatch interviews. “It’s swollen, and when it’s swollen it’s definitely not a good first sign,” Djokovic said. He managed to pull off the victory despite going down early on. However, it took two hours and 35 minutes to defeat Querrey. That’s a lengthy match to play on a bum ankle.

With Djokovic’s win, Serbia took a 3-1 lead over the United States, which will send it to the Davis Cup semis. That round won’t be played until September, though, so the top singles player shouldn’t be missing for those matches.
