Draws for the 2013 edition of Wimbledon, which begin on Monday, were announced, and chances are we won’t be seeing a rematch of a previous Wimbledon final on either the men’s or women’s side of the Championships.

Only two former finals matchups are even hypothetically possible on both sides of the draw, with Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer slated for a potential quarterfinals duel.

For the gentlemen, the premier matchup of the last decade or so could be a quarterfinal showdown, as third-seeded Roger Federer and sixth-seeded Rafael Nadal are in the same quadrant of the draw. Second-seeded Andy Murray will have to get through Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, against whom he has won seven straight matchups since 2008, and then the winner of the presumptive Federer-Nadal matchup if he wants to make it to the championship match for the second straight season. Once again, much of the talk at Wimbledon will surround Murray’s hopes of becoming the first Brit to win a title since the year of the flood.
Top-seeded Novak Djokovic’s coast isn’t completely clear. His presumptive quarterfinal matchup is against seventh-seeded Tomas Berdych, who just bested him in an Italian Open quarterfinal matchup, although ninth-seeded Richard Gasquet is also a potential opponent. And in a potential semifinal, he could have to face eighth-seeded Juan Martin Del Potro, who just beat him at Indian Wells in March. The other top-eight seed is David Ferrer, against whom Djokovic is 10-2 all-time.
On the women’s side of the draw, only two former Finals matchups are even hypothetically possible. Top-seeded Serena Williams is on one side of the bracket and third-seeded Maria Sharapova is on the other, a potential reprise of the finals all the way back in 2004. Williams could also face off against her 2007 opponent, Marion Bartoli, although at 15th she is a longshot to make it that far.
At this point, it barely seems like it matters who Williams has to play, but if you must know, her quadrant of the draw contains seventh-seeded Angelique Kerber, who is actually 1-2 against Williams in her career, with fourth-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska and sixth-seeded Li Na potential semifinal matchups. Radwanska lost Williams in last year’s final, while Na’s only win in seven tries against Williams came in 2008.
Sharapova’s quarter contains fifth-seeded Sara Errani, while second-seeded Victoria Azarenka and 2011 runner-up Petra Kvitova are in the other quarter.
