The Wimbledon field took another hit on Wednesday afternoon after No. 3 seed Maria Sharapova fell in straight sets to Portugal’s Michelle Larcher de Brito, 6-3, 6-4. Sharapova survived four match points before ultimately succumbing during a fifth against Larcher de Brito, who was unseeded and ranked 131st in the world entering the tournament.
Wimbledon results 2013: Maria Sharapova falls to Michelle Larcher de Brito
The former Wimbledon champ was ousted in straight sets by the world’s 131st ranked player, Michelle Larcher de Brito.

Sharapova did not appear to be at 100 percent and even had to take a break at one point to stretch out with a trainer. She would not retire due to injury, however, unlike the six other players who did so on Wednesday, including Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Jon Isner, and Victoria Azarenka.
Sharapova becomes the seventh seed among the top 13 in the women’s bracket to be ousted from Wimbledon prior to the start of the third round. With that many higher seeds already gone, it will be a true upset if Serena Williams doesn’t come away with the title.
The start to this tournament has showed that top seeds are clearly not shoe-ins to advance, however, so Williams’ road might not be as easy as it looks.
