Wimbledon results 2013: Roger Federer loses to Sergiy Stakhovsky

The defending champion falls in four sets and his record streak comes to an end.

Roger Federer hadn’t fallen short of the quarterfinals in a Grand Slam event since 2004, but that streak came to an end at Wimbledon on Wednesday. Federer fell in four sets to Sergiy Stakhovsky of Ukraine, 6-7, 7-6, 7-5, 7-6.

A seven-time winner at Wimbledon, and the currently No. 3 ranked player in the world, Federer had made to at least the quarterfinals in a record 36-straight Grand Slam events.

Federer won Wimbledon every year from 2003 to 2007, repeating again in 2009 and then defeating Andy Murray last year to win his seventh title at the event. He is tied with Pete Sampras for the most Wimbledon titles ever in Gentleman’s Singles, and will have to wait another year to attempt to tie rival Rafael Nadal with titles at a major, Nadal earning his eighth at Roland Garros just weeks ago.

Meanwhile Stakhovsky, 27, had never beaten a top-10 player in 20 previous tries, nor advanced past the third round of a Grand Slam event. He is currently ranked 116th in the world. Today’s victory should see him move up that list.
