Wimbledon 2013 results and scores: Sabine Lisicki upsets top-seeded Serena Williams

The women’s draw of the quarterfinals is a graveyard of the high-seeded tennis players as Serena Williams was yet another high seed to make an early exit.

USA TODAY Sports

The women’s draw of the 2013 Wimbledon took another wild turn as the No. 1 seed Serena Williams was upset by No. 23 Sabine Lisicki on Monday.

Other than that rather large upset, the rest of Monday’s matches went as the seeding would suggest. No. 1 Novak Djokovic defeated No. 13 Tommy Haas in three sets and No. 2 Andy Murray needed three sets as well to dispatch No. 20 Mikhail Youzhny.

Whereas the men’s quarterfinals draw looks somewhat predictable, the women’s draw has a whole host of unknown names to casual tennis watchers. Agnieszka Radwanska is the highest-seeded woman at No. 4, and only three of the eight remaining players are seeded in the top 10.

Lisicki got off to a hot start, defeating Williams 6-2 in the first set. But Williams looked like she regrouped quickly and would be rolling her way to the quarterfinals with a 6-1 thrashing in the second set. Williams went up 3-0 in the third set but couldn’t close it out as Lisicki moved onto the quarterfinals after taking the third set 6-4.

Complete results of Monday’s matches can be found here. Updated brackets for both the men’s and women’s quarterfinal draws are available on Wimbledon.com.
