Wimbledon 2013 results and scores: Andy Murray survives to set up men’s semifinals

The semifinals on the men’s draw at Wimbledon are now set, after an upset-filled week-plus at the All England Club. Despite a tournament that saw perennial finals contenders Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal fall early, the final group of four players features plenty of star power, with No. 1 Novak Djokovic, No. 2 Andy Murray, No. 8 Juan Martin Del Potro and No. 24 Jerzy Janowicz set to square off.

Murray’s run very nearly ended Wednesday. The Scotsman was visibly frustrated after falling down two sets to the hard-hitting Fernando Verdasco. He never fully recovered the confident forehand he displayed throughout the first week, but he was able to cobble together a 4-6, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4, 7-5 victory by taking control of break point opportunities. After the the second set, Murray converted 4-of-5 break point chances, and successfully defended all four of del Potro’s opportunities, all of which came in a critical fourth set.

Murray advances to face Janowicz in the semifinals. Janowicz defeated Lukasz Kubot, 7-5, 6-4, 6-4, in the first ever match between two Polish players in a men’s grand slam. Janowicz reaffirmed his position as one of the game’s rising stars. At 6’8, he can get uncommon leverage and power on the ball, which he showed off by recording 30 aces and scoring on 90 percent of the first serves he put in play. Janowicz has more to his game than just power, however, as SB Nation’s Bill Connelly writes:

The 6’8 Pole is more than just a big serve; his movement has translated well to the grass -- as I wrote earlier this week, he is two inches taller than Juan Martin del Potro but moves like he is four inches shorter -- and his defense has improved over the last year.

Del Potro, meanwhile, was able to turn in an impressive victory over No. 4 David Ferrer, despite dealing with a lingering knee injury. He smothered Ferrer with mostly mistake-free tennis on his way to a 6-2, 6-4, 7-6, victory. For the match, del Potro committed just 11 unforced errors to Ferrer’s 22, and gave up and successfully defended just two break point chances.

Djokovic awaits the Argentinian in the semis. The world No. 1 drew a tough matchup in No. 7 Tomas Berdych. The last time the two faced each other on grass, Berdych won in straight sets. Djokovic flipped the script Wednesday, however, advancing on a 7-6, 6-4, 6-3, win. The match turned on the tiebreak in the first set. Berdych committed two straight unforced errors to lose the game, 7-5, and the set. Djokovic went down 3-0 in the second set, but then found his groove to win 12 of the last 16 games for the match.
