Maria Sharapova out of U.S. Open with shoulder bursitis

Maria Sharapova will miss the 2013 U.S. Open due to right shoulder bursitis, according to Ben Rothenberg of The New York Times.

Sharapova, the 2006 U.S. Open champion, was set to be the No. 3 seed in the tournament. The draw for the U.S. Open will take place on Thursday, with tournament play beginning on Monday.

Sharapova has played only one match on tour since falling in the second round at Wimbledon in June. The 26-year-old finished second at the French Open and lost in the semifinals of the Australian Open, so she will finish the year without a Grand Slam title after taking home the French Open in 2012.

The injury caps off what has been an eventful few days for Sharapova. The Russian star had considered changing her name to Sugarpova, the name of her candy company, for the U.S. Open. However, she ultimately decided against the change on Tuesday before withdrawing from the tournament on Wednesday.
