The 2013 U.S. Open doesn’t get underway until next Monday, but the festivities began on Thursday with the drawing ceremony. First-round matchups have been announced, and potential late-round pairings are already being discussed.
U.S. Open draw 2013 announced: Novak Djokovic, Serena Williams sit atop brackets
Djokovic leads the men’s side as the No. 1 seed, but can last year’s winner, Andy Murray, repeat as champ?

The top spot in the men’s bracket (complete men’s draw) is occupied by Novak Djokovic, who will face the Lithuanian Ricardas Berankis in the opening round. Last year’s Open winner, Andy Murray, gets the third seed and matches up with Michael Llodra in Round 1. Murray defeated Djokovic in the finals last year to become the first British man since 1936 to win a Grand Slam singles title.
Rafael Nadal grabs the No. 2 seed and will face American Ryan Harrison to start the tournament. David Ferrer of Spain receives the fourth seed, and Czech Tomas Berdych rounds out the top five. Roger Federer comes in at No. 7 and will play Grega Zemlja to start his tournament.
On the women’s side (complete women’s draw), Serena Williams is the top seed. Beating last year’s Open champion will be a tall order, especially for her first-round draw, Francesca Schiavone of Italy. Victoria Azarenka sits atop the opposite side of the bracket at No. 2. She’ll play Dinah Pfizenmaier of Germany in her first match.
Agnieszka Radwanska grabs the No. 3 seed, where she’ll match up with Spain’s Silvia Soler-Espinosa. Sara Errani of Italy and Na Li of China get the fourth and fifth spots, respectively.
