Prior to that, Williams will face Kirsten Flipkens of Belgium, the No. 12 seed in the women’s draw.

Later in the evening, top-seeded Serena Williams will begin her U.S. Open title defense against Italy’s Francesca Schiavone. Roger Federer, the No. 7 seed in the men’s draw, will then square off against Slovenia’s Grega Zemlja.
