The 2013 U.S. Open began on Monday, and although it came to an early end due to rain there was plenty of action before the bad weather hit. Serena Williams, Venus Williams and Rafael Nadal were among the players who finished their matches while Roger Federer will have to wait until Tuesday to hit the court.

Day 1 of the U.S. Open is in the books although rain delayed the final three matches of the day.

Nadal, the No. 2 seed, has already won two tournaments in August. He improved to 16-0 on hardcourts this season with a 6-4, 6-2, 6-2 win against Ryan Harrison. He was one of three top-10 seeds in action and both No. 4 David Ferrer and No. 8 Richard Gasquet also advanced. Ferrer was challenged by Nick Kyrgios early, but went on to win, 7-5, 6-3, 6-2.
No. 7 Federer was scheduled to play Grega Zemlja in the first round, but weather forced the match to be delayed. Rain hit with three matches to go, causing two of the matches to be suspended while Federer’s match was delayed as he was yet to take the court. Federer’s match was rescheduled for the third match of the day on Tuesday.
Kei Nishikori was the highest seed to fall on the men’s side. The No. 11 seed lost to Daniel Evans in straight sets.
On the women’s side, Serena Williams got off to a dominant start, defeating Francesca Schiavone, 6-0, 6-1. Joining her in the second round is her sister Venus, who upset No. 12 Kirsten Flipkens earlier in the day. Williams defeated Flipkens, 6-1, 6-2, despite 20 unforced errors.
In addition to Serena Williams, four other top-10 seeds hit the court and all advanced. No. 3 Agnieszka Radwanska, No. 5 Na Li, No. 8 Angelique Kerber and No. 9 Jelena Jankovic all won in straight sets. No. 15 Sloane Stephens also advanced, although she needed a third-set tiebreaker to do so. Stephens lost the first set of her match with Mandy Minella, 4-6. She won the second set, 6-3, and was able to survive with a 7-6 (7-5) victory in the third set.
The U.S. Open, including the three postponed matches on Monday, will resume on Tuesday at 11 a.m. ET.
