After weather delayed his match on Monday, Roger Federer had to wait until Tuesday to make his 2013 U.S. Open debut. Weather wasn’t an issue this time around and Federer advanced with a straight-set victory against Grega Zemlja.

Roger Federer, Caroline Wozniacki and Sara Errani were among the favorites to advance at the U.S. Open on Tuesday.

The two split the first six games to begin the match, before Federer won three in a row to take the first set, 6-3. He continued that success in the second set, winning 6-2 before taking the match with a 7-5 victory in the third set. Federer will face Carlos Berlocq in the second round. Berlocq needed five sets to defeat Santiago Giraldo in the first round.
In addition to Federer, No. 10 Milos Raonic, No. 12 Tommy Haas and No. 13 John Isner advanced with straight-set victories. There were a pair of early upsets with Wimbledon semifinalist Jerzy Janowicz, the 14th seed, and No. 15 Nicolas Almagro losing to unseeded players.
On the women’s side, No. 4 Sara Errani cruised to a straight-set victory against Olivia Rogowska, winning 6-0, 6-0. No. 6 Caroline Wozniacki wasn’t quite as dominant. She defeated Ying-Ying Duan 6-2, 7-5 to advance. No. 7 Petra Kvitova needed three sets to defeat Misaki Doi while No. 10 Roberta Vinci and No. 13 Ana Ivanovic also advanced.
The first round continues through the night with women’s No. 2-seed Victoria Azarenka and men’s No. 1-seed Novak Djokovic among the players still scheduled to take the court.
