U.S. Open 2013 scores: Rain washes out Serena Williams, much of early action
The first rain of the U.S. Open dampened most of the play in the morning, and bumped a number of matches to Thursday.

Intermittent rain frustrated players and fans alike, as more than once, play appeared ready to start again before the drops again began falling. Several women’s matches scheduled for the day session were canceled to make room for men’s matches, because, as of 4 p.m. on Day 3, 17 first-round matches in the men’s draw had not yet been played, while the entire women’s draw was already in Round 2.
No. 1-seeded Serena Williams was one of the rain’s casualties, as were Nos. 8 and 9, Angelique Kerber and Jelena Jankovic. They will play Thursday instead.
Of the matches that players were able to get in early on, there were no upsets. No. 3 Agnieszka Radwanska and No. 5 Li Na both won in straight sets, the two highest seeds in either draw to complete their matches. On the men’s side, Russian 17th-seed Kevin Anderson needed four sets to get by Daniel Brands, No. 21 Mikhail Youzhny got a straight-sets victory over Nicolas Mahut and Marcos Baghdatis got to Round 2 in straight sets over Go Soeda.
