U.S. Open 2013 results: Roger Federer, Serena Williams cruise

Everything is going to plan for Roger Federer and Serena Williams, who both advanced to the third round Thursday on the strength of straight-set victories.

Day 4 of the 2013 U.S. Open went exactly as planned for two of the tournament’s biggest stars. Roger Federer and Serena Williams both won in straight sets Thursday to advance to Round 3 at Flushing Meadows. The two dropped a combined nine games across five combined sets played.

Federer topped Carlos Berlocq, 6-3, 6-2, 6-1. Berlocq simply didn’t have the firepower to keep up with the 17-time grand slam champion. He scored on just 51 percent of the first serves he put in play, compared to 75 percent for Federer. Though Berlocq was the safer player, committing 17 unforced errors to to Federer’s 25, he was dominated on winners, 35-17.

Williams had a similar match against Galina Voskoboeva of Kazakhstan. Williams won 6-3, 6-0, and was sharper throughout the match, scoring on a higher percentage of her second-serve chances (69 percent) than Voskoboeva could manage on her first serves (55 percent). Williams broke Voskoboeva five times in seven chances. Voskoboeva had just one break point opportunity and failed to convert.

Federer advances to play the winner between Adrian Mannarino of France and Sam Querry of the United States. Williams will take on another player from Kazakhstan, Yaroslava Shvedova.
