Just one American man remains alive in the 2013 U.S. Open after John Isner and Jack Sock were eliminated from the tournament Saturday. This is still an improvement from the zero men who reached the third round of this year’s Wimbledon, but it’s possible none of them advance past this weekend.

The highest-ranked American in the world, Isner couldn’t get past Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany in Saturday’s third-round match. Seeded 13th in the tournament, Isner fell 6-4, 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 to 22nd-seeded Kohlschreiber, who advances to the fourth round of the U.S. Open for the second straight year.
Sock didn’t put up as much of a fight against 18th-seeded Janko Tipsarevic, who won 3-6, 7-6 (7-1), 6-1, 6-2 on Saturday. Coupled with Isner’s defeat, the pressure is now on Tim Smyczek to beat Marcel Granollers in Sunday’s match and maintain an American presence into next week.
In non-American news, a number of elite players advanced to the fourth round with victories Saturday. Second-seeded Rafael Nadal easily dispatched Ivan Dodig in straight sets, while fourth-seeded David Ferrer needed four sets to beat Mikhail Kukushkin. Tenth-seeded Milos Raonic beat 23rd-seeded Feliciano Lopez as well.
