The top seeds hit the courts on Sunday at the U.S. Open and made quick work of their opponents, with both Serena Williams and Novak Djokovic each winning in straight sets against Sloane Stephens and Joao Sousa, respectively.

The top seeds managed to get through Sunday’s play at the U.S. Open relatively unscathed, although No. 3 Agnieszka Radwanska was knocked out of the tournament.

Sunday’s match between No. 15 seed Stephens and No. 1 Williams was one of the most anticipated of the day as it was Stephens that earned a victory in their last meeting, eliminating Williams in the quarterfinals round of the 2013 Australian Open in January.
The rematch started close, Stephens and Williams each winning four of the first eight games, but after that it was all Williams who won eight of the next nine games. The 6-4, 6-1 victory sends Williams to the quarterfinals where she is scheduled to face No. 18 Carla Suarez Navarro of Spain on Tuesday.
Navarro earned one of the few upsets of Sunday, defeating No. 8 Angelique Kerber of Germany in a third set tiebreaker, 4-6, 6-3, 7-6. The biggest upset belonged to No. 24 Ekaterina Makarova who managed to knock out No. 3 Agnieszka Radwanska in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4.
The men’s singles tournament was relatively upset-free on Sunday, as top-seeded Djokovic, No. 3 Andy Murray and No. 5 Tomas Berdych all won in straight sets to advance to the fourth round.
Tournament play is scheduled to resume Monday in New York City at 11 a.m. ET.
