It was a good day in Melbourne for the top seeds in the 2014 Australian Open, as Serena Williams, Novak Djokovic and David Ferrer each cruised to wins on the tournament’s opening day.
Australian Open 2014 results and bracket: Top seeds cruise on Day 1
Serena Williams and Novak Djokovic won in straight sets in their opening rounds.


Djokovic and Ferrer began the morning for the men’s bracket by winning in straight sets. Djokovic, the No. 2 seed, defeated Lukas Lacko of Slovakia while the No. 3 seed Ferrer eased by Alejandro Gonzalez of Columbia.
Other top 10-seeded winners on the men’s side were No. 7 Tomas Berdych, No. 8 Stanislas Wawrinka and No. 9 Richard Gasquet.
Serena, the women’s top seed, recorded a straight set victory over Australian Ashleigh Barty. Her sister, Venus, didn’t fare as well against No. 22 Ekaterina Makarova. After winning the opening set against the Russian, she lost the next two to lose the match.
Top-seeded winners in the women’s bracket included No. 4 Na Li and No. 9 Angelique Kerber.
Seventh-seeded Sara Errani lost to Julia Goerges in straight sets, while Luksika Kumkhum upset No. 6 Petra Kvitova two sets to one.
