2014 Australian Open results and bracket: Rafael Nadal advances, Lleyton Hewitt loses on Day 2

Day 2 of the Australian Open is in the books, and injuries combined with heat continue to force matches into ending early. Still, the top seeds advanced on both the men’s and women’s sides.

The first round of the 2014 Australian Open is in the books, and though we haven’t had too many upsets, we’ve had some surprises. A whopping eight men retired from the first round due to injury or heat. Temperatures peaked at 108 degrees on the second day of play, right as Lleyton Hewitt and Andy Murray were playing their matches.

Frank Dancevic collapsed on court during his match with Benoit Paire and multiple players were covered in ice packs throughout play. One player who retired was Bernard Tomic, putting a disappointing end to one of the more anticipated round one matchups. Tomic was playing Rafael Nadal, and threw in the towel after dropping the first set, 6-4.

Tomic was always an underdog to Nadal, but fans were expecting a good battle nonetheless. None of the top seeds on the men’s side were defeated on day two, with Nadal winning, No. 4 seed Andy Murray easily dropping Go Soeda, 6-1, 6-1, 6-3 in his matchup, No. 6 Roger Federer cruising past James Duckworth, 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 in his and Juan Martin Del Potro, the No. 5 seed, making it past Rhyne Williams.

Del Potro did have to play four sets, as Williams, an American, took the first. In the end, Del Potro won, 6-7(1), 6-3, 6-4, 6-4. Hewitt did lose his match, though. Despite being unseeded, Hewitt had some higher expectations in this tournament, but Andreas Seppi, the No. 24 seed, took him down in five sets, 7-6(4), 6-3, 5-7, 5-7, 7-5.

On the women’s side, Maria Sharapova, Victoria Azarenka, Agnieszka Radwanska, Jelena Jankovic and the rest of the top seeds all advanced easily.

Day 3 is already underway; you can find a schedule here.
