Australian Open 2014 results and bracket: Novak Djokovic upset in the quarterfinals

There will be a new men’s singles champion at the Australian Open after the three-year reign of Novak Djokovic came to an end on Tuesday morning. The four-time Australian Open champion lost 9-7 in the final set to No. 8-seed Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland.

After earning a quick 6-2 victory in the first set, Djokovic dropped consecutive sets before rallying to win the fourth set, 6-3. The fifth set took 79 minutes before Wawrinka finally earned the victory to send him to the semifinals. His only other trip to the semifinals of a Grand Slam was in the 2013 U.S. Open where he was defeated by Djokovic who went on to lose to Rafael Nadal in the finals.

With the victory, Wawrinka advanced to face No. 9-seed Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic, who defeated No. 3 David Ferrer of Spain.

The other semifinal matchup will be decided on Wednesday when No. 1 Nadal faces No. 22 Grigor Dimitrov and No. 4 Andy Murray takes on No. 6 Roger Federer.
