2014 Davis Cup final results: France, Switzerland tied after Roger Federer, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga fall on Day 1

The first day of the 2014 Davis Cup finals is in the books, and we’ve got a tie between France and Switzerland. Two big singles matches punctuated the first day, as Stan Wawrinka took down Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Gael Monfils managed to dominate Roger Federer, leading to a 1-1 tie after one day.

Wawrinka handled Tsonga without much issue, though Tsonga did manage to take the second set at 6-3, hitting 16 winners to even up the match after two. Wawrinka dominated the next two sets, hitting 61 winners overall en route to the 6-1, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. Tsonga, who hasn’t looked like himself at all in recent tournaments, was fighting off break points for much of the match and had a run of unforced errors in the third set to spark his downfall.

There was a lot of talk about Federer’s back injury coming into these finals, but he didn’t necessarily look like he was hurting on Friday. He was moving well, but he was simply out-played by Monfils, who took his win in less than two hours, 6-1, 6-4, 6-3. It was Monfils’ first win on clay over Federer. He hit 44 winners, which includes 10 aces, and he managed to fight off a pair of Federer break points early on.

It’s unclear how the doubles will be split up on Saturday. If Federer is healthy enough to play, then he’ll team up with Wawrinka to try and put Switzerland ahead in the country’s search for its first-ever Davis Cup title.
