Stan Wawrinka’s stay in Paris was much shorter than his stay in Melbourne. Roughly four months after capturing the Australian Open, the Swiss pro was knocked out of the French Open in the first round by Guillermo Garcia-Lopez.

Wawrinka led 3-1 in the first set, but Garcia-Lopez rallied back to take the match 6-4, 5-7, 6-2, 6-0. Wawrinka, the tournament’s three-seed, had 61 unforced errors against the 41st-ranked Spaniard.

The other favorites fared better. No. 1 Rafael Nadal dropped Robby Ginepri in straight sets and second-seeded Novak Djokovic breezed past Joao Sousa with similar ease.

The only other top 10 upset on the men’s side was No. 9 Kei Nishikori falling in three sets to Martin Klizan of Slovakia.

The biggest name in action on the women’s side of the tourney was Maria Sharapova, who rolled through fellow Russian Ksenia Pervak, 6-1, 6-2. Top 10 seeds Petra Kvitova (No. 5) and Dominika Cibulkova (No. 9) also won in straight sets.
