Day 4 of the 2014 French Open is in full swing, and we’ve got plenty of action to talk about through the bulk of the day’s big matches. We already talked about the biggest upset of the day, as unseeded Garbine Muguruza took down women’s No. 1 seed Serena Williams in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. The top two seeds in the women’s bracket have now been eliminated, as No. 2 Li Na was bounced out in the first round.

The upsets continued on Day 4 at the French Open, but Novak Djokovic rolled through his competition as expected.

But while Williams was eliminated, the top seed in action for the men -- No. 2 Novak Djokovic -- cruised to victory over his opponent, unseeded Jeremy Chardy. Djokovic won in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4, 6-2. Djokovic will wait to see if he’ll be getting No. 25 Marin Cilic or unseeded Tobias Kamke in the third round. No. 29 Gilles Simon cruised to a three-set victory over Alejandro Gonzalez early on as well, winning 6-4, 6-0, 6-2.
There were some minor upsets outside of Williams early on in Day 4 as well, however. No. 15 seed on the men’s side, Mikhail Youzhny, fell to unseeded Radek Stepanek in four sets. Stepanek took that one 6-0, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4. He’s one of the more dangerous unseeded players hitting the third round.
For the women, No. 12 seed Flavia Pennetta fell to unseeded Johanna Larsson in three sets. Larsson won that one, 5-7, 6-4, 6-2. On top of that, Women’s No. 29 seed Venus Williams fell to unseeded Anna Schmiedlova in three sets, 6-2, 3-6, 4-6.
Other top seeds on the men’s side, like No. 4 Roger Federer and No. 13 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, are currently playing or will soon be playing their Day 4 matchups. The same goes for the women, with matches featuring notables Maria Sharapova (No. 7) and Agnieszka Radwanska (No. 3) still to come.
At the time of publishing, men’s No. 6 seed Tomas Berdych was in the third set against Aleksandr Nedovyesov, who surprisingly took the first set from him. We’ll have more results when the day’s action is complete, but in the meantime, you can head over to the Roland Garros site for more.
