The Round of 16 is in the books for both the men and the women at the 2014 French Open, which means the quarterfinals are set. Monday saw the top names in action once again, and for once, there weren’t any huge upsets.
French Open results 2014: Quarterfinals set as Rafael Nadal, David Ferrer among Monday winners
The Round of 16 wrapped up on Monday, and the big names -- Rafael Nadal, David Ferrer, Andy Murray and Simona Halep among them -- are all advancing to the quarterfinals.

Men’s No. 1 seed Rafael Nadal easily cruised to victory over his unseeded opponent, Dusan Lajovic, winning in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2, 6-1. Nadal has looked sharp all tournament, as expected, and is once again favored to win it all. The more contested matchup on Monday saw No. 5 seed David Ferrer taking on No. 19 Kevin Anderson.
Ferrer took the first two sets at 6-3, 6-3, but Anderson fought back and eventually took a tiebreak in the third set. Ferrer responded with a crushing fourth set, however, beating back any potential comeback. No. 23 Gael Monfils also won his match, taking down Guillermo Garcia-Lopez. Both No. 7 Andy Murray and No. 24 Fernando Verdasco had their previous matches postponed, but finished them up in short order the following morning. The two faced off on Monday, and it was Murray who came out on top, winning 6-4, 7-5, 7-6(7-3).
For the women, No. 4 seed Simona Halep took down No. 15 Sloane Stephens, 6-4, 6-3. Halep is the top seed remaining as all three of the top seeds were eliminated earlier in the tournament, with No. 1 Serena Williams getting bounced in the second round. No. 6 seed Jelena Jankovic fell on Monday, though she lost to a fellow top 10 seed in Sara Errani. Errani, the No. 10 seed, took it in consecutive set,s 7-6(7-5), 6-2.
