The first round at Wimbledon continued Tuesday at the All England Club, where Serena Williams and Rafael Nadal moved on to the second round with relative ease. They were the lucky ones. Nine seeded players lost in upsets on Day 2.

Two of the favorites won on the second day of action at the All England Club.

Williams, No. 1 in the women’s singles competition, needed a little more than an hour to dispatch fellow American Anna Tatishvili, 6-1, 6-2. She dominated on the serve, compiling 16 aces without being broken. Williams’ fastest serve was 117 mph, and she won 78 percent of her fist-serve points. Tatishvili failed to record an ace and came away with just seven winners. Both players committed 13 unforced errors.
In the second round, Williams will face Russian Chanelle Scheepers, who is coming off a win over American Christina McHale, 6-3, 6-3.
Nadal’s advancement wasn’t quite as simple, but after dropping the first set, the men’s singles No. 2 managed to get by Martin Klizan, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, 6-3. Klizan out-aced Nadal, 11-6, but the Slovak committed 32 unforced errors to Nadal’s 25. The two-time Wimbledon champion won 72 percent of his first-serve points, compared to 62 percent for Klizan.
Nadal will meet Czech Lukas Rosol in the second round. Rosol defeated Frenchman Benoit Paire, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (12), 6-4, in the first round.
On the men’s side, No. 28 Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, No. 29 Ivo Karlovic and No. 32 Dmitry Tursunov fell to unseeded opponents. No. 7 Jelena Jankovic, No. 14 Sara Errani, No. 21 Roberta Vinci, No. 26 Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, No. 28 Svetlana Kuznetsova and No. 29 Sorana Cirstea went down on the women’s side.
