Serena Williams is out of Wimbledon after losing 6-1, 3-6, 4-6 to No. 25 Alize Cornet in the third round on Saturday. Williams entered the tournament as the top seed on the women’s side with five Wimbledon titles over her career, the most recent coming in 2012.

The 24-year-old Cornet had previously beaten Anna Schmiedlova and Petra Cetkovska before defeating Williams. She will face No. 13 Eugenie Bouchard next. Bouchard defeated Andrea Petkovic 6-3, 6-4 on Saturday to advance.

Cornet’s victory registers as a major upset. Williams was chasing her 18th Grand Slam title, but has been struggling in major tournaments lately. It’s the earliest loss for Williams at Wimbledon since 2005. She has now failed to advance to the quarterfinals in four of the last five Grand Slams.

Earlier in the day, No. 5 Maria Sharapova defeated Alison Riske 6-3, 6-0 to advance. Sharapova is looking for her sixth Grand Slam after winning the French Open earlier this year.
