French Open 2014: Matches and TV schedule for Thursday at Roland Garros

The French Open women’s final will be set on Thursday with the semifinal matchups headlining the schedule.

Dan Istitene

While the competition on the men’s singles side will take a day off on Thursday, the women’s draw will continue with the semifinal round. No. 4 Simona Halep remains the highest-seeded player, and the 22-year-old can take another step toward winning her first grand slam event.

Halep -- who didn’t lose a set during her first five matches -- will face No. 28 Andrea Petkovic in the semifinals. With a number of upsets happening during the early rounds, Halep has been the highest-seeded player for much of the tournament and responded with strong play. Not only has she not dropped a set, but only twice has she lost more than three games during a set. Petkovic hasn’t been as strong during her French Open run, needing three sets in three of her matches. She was in top form on Wednesday, however, dispatching No. 10 Sara Errani in straight sets 6-2, 6-2.

The other semifinal will pit two players with similar styles as No. 7 Maria Sharapova will take on No. 18 Eugenie Bouchard. The 20-year-old Bouchard was able to outlast Carla Suarez Navarro 76- (7-4), 2-6, 7-5 to reach the semifinal. Sharapova also needed three sets in the quarterfinal, beating Garbine Muguruza 1-6, 7-5, 6-1.

ESPN2 and NBC will both provide television coverage for the women’s semifinals. ESPN2’s broadcast will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. ET with NBC broadcasting from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. ET. There will also be online coverage from ESPN3 and NBC Sports Live Extra.
