The eighth day at the 2014 Wimbledon Championships featured quite a few major upsets as both men’s No. 2 seed Rafael Nadal and women’s No. 5 seed Maria Sharapova were bounced out in the fourth round. Big names like Roger Federer and Simona Halep were able to advance.
Wimbledon 2014 scores and results: Rafael Nadal, Maria Sharapova eliminated
Nadal and Sharapova were both eliminated at Wimbledon on Tuesday, while Roger Federer cruised to victory and into the quarterfinals.

Federer, the No. 4 seed, advanced to the quarterfinals after downing No. 23 seed Tommy Robredo in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4, 6-4. He moved on to a quarterfinal matchup against Stan Wawrinka, the No. 5 seed, and is now the favorite to make it into the semifinals and possibly the finals on that side of the bracket. No. 1 Novak Djokovic is still in on the other side.
Nadal is not, however. Nadal fell to Australian Nick Kyrgios, an unseeded 19-year-old who only turned pro last season. Kyrgios took the match in four sets, 7-6(5), 5-7, 7-6(5), 6-3. He’s now felled two seeded opponents, having bested Richard Gasquet, the No. 13 seed, in the second round. He advances to the quarterfinals to take on No. 8 Milos Raonic, who defeated No. 10 seed Kei Nishikori on Tuesday.
Sharapova ended up falling to No. 9 seed Angelique Kerber. It was a hard fought match, going the full three sets, but Kerber prevailed, 7-6(4), 4-6, 6-4. Sharapova was one of the favorites for the tournament as the second-highest seed remaining, behind Halep, the No. 3 seed. Halep defeated Zarina Diyas in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0, on Tuesday as well.
Wawrinka, who will take on Federer in the quarterfinals, advanced after downing No. 19 Feliciano Lopez in straight sets, 7-6(5), 7-6(7), 6-3. One half of the women’s semifinals is now set, as Petra Kvitova, the No. 6 seed, was victorious over Barbora Zahlavova Strycova on Tuesday as well. Kvitova will take on Safarova in the semis.
