If upsets are going to happen at the 2014 U.S. Open, they will have to wait until at least Day 2. The fourth and final Grand Slam event got underway on Monday and it was a good day for the top seeds. The opening day didn’t feature any major upsets with stars like Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, Maria Sharapova and Simona Halep advancing to the second round.

On the men’s singles side of the draw, the top-seeded Djokovic had to wait until the final match of the day for his time in Arthur Ashe Stadium. The late start didn’t appear to have any ill effect and he got past Diego Schwartzman with a 6-1, 6-2, 6-4 victory. No. 3 seed Stan Wawrinka faced a slightly tougher challenge against Jiri Vesely, but he also won in three sets. No. 5 Milos Raonic, No. 8 Andy Murray and No. 9 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga all advanced. Murray dropped the third set against Robin Haase, but rebounded to win the fourth set 7-5 and take the match.

Djokovic advances to face Paul-Henri Mathieu in the second round while Murray will take on Radek Stepanek. USOpen.org has an updated look at the men’s bracket.

In women’s singles action, Sharapova was challenged by Maria Kirilenko in the first set, but went on to win 6-4, 6-0. Halep, the No. 2 seed, dropped her first set to Danielle Rose-Collins only to take the match, 6-7, 6-1, 6-2. No. 10 Caroline Wozniacki advanced when Magdalena Rybarikova retired during the third set due to a leg injury. Wozniacki was leading 2-0 in the third set when Rybarikova was forced to retire. No. 4 Agnieszka Radwanska opened the tournament in excellent form, cruising to a 6-1, 6-0 win against Sharon Fichman.

Radwanska will face Shuai Peng in the second round while Sharapova will play Alexandra Dulgheru in the next round. The updated bracket through Day 1 can be found at USOpen.org.
