There were few upsets Wednesday at the U.S. Open, though American upstart Sloane Stephens was a second-round casualty. Fan favorites such as Maria Sharapova and Stan Wawrinka advanced with ease.

In the men’s draw, third-seeded Wawrinka advanced to the third round with a 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 win over Thomaz Bellucci. Sixth-seeded Tomas Berdych knocked out 2001 U.S. Open champion Lleyton Hewitt, 6-3, 6-4, 6-3, while No. 7 seed Grigor Dimitrov took out unranked American Ryan Harrison, 6-2, 7-6, 6-2. No. 11 Ernests Gulbis, No. 14 Marin Cilic, and No. 18 Kevin Anderson advanced in straight sets.

Wednesday did bring the end of the Open for two ranked men. No. 27 seed Santiago Giraldo bowed out after a 6-3, 1-6, 7-6, 6-3 loss to Russian Teymuraz Gabashvili, while No. 30 seed Jeremy Chardy, was beaten in straight sets by Blaz Kavcic, 6-2, 7-6, 6-3. Here is an updated look at the men’s draw following the matches on Wednesday.

In the women’s draw, fifth-ranked Maria Sharapova recovered from a first-set loss to defeat Alexandra Dulgheru, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2. No. 2 Simona Halep routed Jana Cepelova, 6-2, 6-1. Sixth-seeded Angelique Kerber rolled past Alla Kudryavtseva 6-2, 6-4. No. 9 Jelena Jankovic and No. 10 Caroline Wozniacki advanced to the third round with comfortable straight-set victories. Venus Williams, seeded No. 19 this year, won in straight sets against Switzerland’s Timea Bacsinszk,y 6-1, 6-4. In the evening’s final women’s match, No. 13 Sara Errani defeated Anastasia Rodionova, 6-4, 7-6.

The biggest upset in either draw came early Wednesday, when Johanna Larsson knocked off Stephens, ranked No. 21, 5-7, 6-4, 6-2. The 21-year-old Stephens, who advanced to the quarterfinals of two majors in 2013, failed to get out of the first round at Wimbledon and bows out in the second round of the U.S. Open.
