The Rounds of 16 rolled on at the U.S. Open on Monday with the No. 1 seeds in the men’s and women’s singles both in action. Both Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams easily moved on to the quarterfinals with straight-set victories.

Those victories were two of the eight matches played. The day didn’t go as well for some of the other highly seeded players with a pair of top-10 seeds eliminated. The day also brought one of the latest-finishing matches in U.S. Open history with Kei Nishikori and Milos Raonic playing a grueling five-set affair.

Men’s singles

With his 6-1, 7-5, 6-4 victory against No. 22 Philipp Kohlschreiber, Djokovic advanced to the quarterfinals, where he will face No. 8 Andy Murray. Murray also won in straight sets on Monday, but had a little more of a challenge against No. 9 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. Murray won, 7-5, 7-5, 6-4, to advance. No. 3 Stan Wawrinka was also pushed, but moved on. He dropped the second set to Tommy Robredo, but won the match, 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (9-7), 6-2. The final match of the night turned out to be one of the best contests of the tournament. No. 5 Raonic and No. 10 Nishikori needed the full five sets. The match swung back and forth several times. Raonic looked good early, taking the first set 6-4. They needed a tiebreaker in the next two sets with Nishikori winning the first and Raonic the second. Nishikori appeared to be struggling with a foot injury in the fourth set, but played through. He finally broke Raonic’s serve late in the set and took it 7-5 to force a fifth set. Nishikori was able to break Raonic again in the fifth set and took a 5-3 lead. Raonic held serve to make it 5-4, but Nishikori capped the match and won 6-4. He will move on to face Wawrinka in the quarterfinal.

Here is a look at the updated draw on the men’s side.

Women’s singles

Williams didn’t have too much issue dispatching Kaia Kanepi, 6-3, 6-3. The No. 1 on the women’s side has yet to drop a set in the tournament. She notched eight aces against Kanepi and had a lot of success on her first serve, winning 21 of 25 points. No. 11 Flavia Pennetta advanced to a quarterfinal match against Williams with a 7-5, 6-2 win against No. 29 Casey Dellacqua. No. 7 Eugenie Bouchard was the highest seed to fall on Monday, losing to No. 17 Ekaterina Makarova in straight sets, 7-6 (7-2), 6-4. She will play No. 16 Victoria Azarenka in the next round. Azarenka dropped the first set against Aleksandra Krunic, but won the next two for a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 win.
