Five-time U.S. Open champion Roger Federer will be in action Thursday as the men’s quarterfinals at the 2014 U.S. Open conclude. Federer, the tournament’s No. 2 seed, will take on 20th-seeded Gael Monfils of France.

In his last match, Federer defeated the No. 17 seed, Roberto Bautista Agut, in straight sets, and the 17-time Grand Slam champion has dropped just one set on his way to the quarterfinals. Monfils has perhaps been even more impressive, however, knocking out higher seeded players in No. 12 Richard Gasquet and No. 7 Grigor Dimitrov en route to his matchup with Federer. Monfils has yet to lose a set so far at the U.S. Open.

Federer has faced Monfils nine times throughout his career, winning seven matches, though Monfils has won two of their last four meetings. The two played earlier this year in Cincinnati, with Federer prevailing in three sets, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.

Thursday’s other quarterfinals match features No. 6 Tomas Berdych taking on No. 14 Marin Cilic. The 6-foot-5 Berdych has reached the semifinals at the U.S. Open just once, back in 2012, while Cilic is making his third appearance in the quarterfinals, a round he has never advanced past.
