Top-ranked Serena Williams will attempt to reach her fourth consecutive U.S. Open final when she takes on No. 17 Ekaterina Makarova on Friday.

Williams has won 19 consecutive matches in Flushing Meadows, with her last loss coming in the 2009 semifinals against Kim Clijsters (the eventual champion) in straight sets. Williams made quick work of Flavia Pennetta on Wednesday, storming back from a 3-0 deficit in the first game to win, 6-3, 6-2.

This will be the fifth time that Williams and Makarova have faced each other. Williams has won three of those matches, but Makarova got the better of the world’s No.1 player at the 2012 Australian Open. A fourth victory over Makarova would set Williams up for a possible third match in the last month against No. 10 Caroline Wozniacki, who faces Peng Shuai in the other semifinal. Williams won both of her previous matches against Wozniacki.

Makarova advanced to her first Grand Slam semifinal by taking down No. 16 Victoria Azarenka, 6-4, 6-2.
