Serena Williams is a step closer to her third consecutive U.S. Open championship. The top seed in the women’s singles bracket dispatched Ekaterina Makarova in straight sets on Friday and will face Caroline Wozniacki in the final on Sunday.

Williams knocked off Ekaterina Makarova, and Wozniacki dispatched Peng Shuai on Friday.

Wozniacki advanced on Friday after a heat stroke forced her semifinal opponent, Peng Shuai, to quit the match. Shuai had won every set she’d played this week at Flushing Meadows, but was dropped, 7-6, by Wozniacki in their first set. Shuai then collapsed with leg cramps during the second set and had to be carried off the court. She eventually returned, only to go down again and be rolled off in a wheelchair. The last set was called with Wozniacki leading, 4-3.
Williams got little fight out of Makarova, who was part of the doubles team that eliminated the Williams sisters earlier this week. Serena was in control from the start, eventually winning, 6-1, 6-3.
Williams is the heavy favorite to win the tournament, having won 17 majors and the last two U.S. Opens. Wozniacki is still waiting on her first major win and hasn’t been to a major final since the 2009 U.S. Open.
The men return to action Saturday with the semifinal round. Novak Djokovic takes on Kei Nishikori, and Roger Federer faces off against Marin Cilic.
