French Open results 2015: Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic advance to 2nd round

Rafael Nadal looked solid in his opening match at the French Open, as did top seeds Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams.

Day 3 of the 2015 French Open is in the books and most of the top seeds survived relatively intact. Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Serena Williams all managed straight-set victories on the day, but some notable names a bit further down the food chain were eliminated by unseeded opponents.

Kristina Mladenovic, an unseeded player, took down women’s No. 6 seed Eugenie Bouchard, 6-4, 6-4, to conclude the action on Suzanne-Lenglen Court. The match was close as far as straight-set victories without a tiebreak go, but Bouchard was too inconsistent in the end. The other big upset saw American Jack Sock take down men’s No. 10 seed Grigor Dimitrov in straight sets, 7-6(7), 6-2, 6-3. Dimitrov is one of the sport’s more promising talents, but Sock dispatched him easily to move into the second round of the tournament.

But all eyes were on the aforementioned top seeds. Djokovic easily dispatched Jarkko Nieminen, 6-2, 7-5, 6-2, while Williams, the top seed for the women, beat Andrea Hlavackova, 6-2, 6-3. It’s a good start for Djokovic, who has yet to win a title at the French Open. That’s partly due to Nadal, the men’s tournament’s No. 6 seed. Nadal has won nine French Open titles in his career, and though he hasn’t been playing well leading up to this tournament, he easily dispatched Quentin Halys, 6-3, 6-3, 6-4, on Tuesday.

Below, we’ve got results from the biggest matches, and full results can be found at the Roland Garros website.
