French Open results 2015: Roger Federer, Maria Sharapova take care of business on Day 4

Most of the favorites won on Wednesday, but Simona Halep is headed home after falling to unseeded Mirjana Lucic-Baroni.

Day 4 of the French Open is complete, and while most of the top seeds advanced, there were a few tough matches and some upsets in the first- and second-round action.

No. 2 seed Roger Federer showed some frustration during his match with Marcel Granollers, but he still managed a straight-set victory against the unseeded Spaniard. After calling out security at Roland Garros Sunday when a fan rushed the court to take a selfie with the tennis star, Federer was more relaxed Wednesday. He told reporters following the match, “Everybody is a little bit more alert. That was the only wish I had.”

“They don’t need to change anything,” Federer said. “It was just more important that everybody was doing their job, taking it very seriously.”

Fifth-seeded Kei Nishikori, last year’s U.S. Open runner-up, defeated Thomaz Bellucci in straight sets, while eighth-seeded Stan Wawrinka dropped one set en route to a victory over 67th-ranked Dusan Lajovic. Wawrinka will face American Steve Johnson in the third round after Johnson beat Sergiy Stakhovsky on Wednesday.

Most of the upsets on the men’s side came at the bottom of the draw with No. 24 seed Ernests Gulbis, No. 28 seed Fabio Fognini and No. 32 seed Fernando Verdasco each losing to unseeded players.

Second-seeded Maria Sharapova cruised into the third round with a straight-set win against Russian Vitalia Diatchenko, improving to 12-0 in second-round matches at the French Open.

The biggest upset of the day saw No. 3 seed Simona Halep, last year’s runner-up at Roland Garros, fall in straight sets 7-5, 6-1 to unseeded Mirjana Lucic-Baroni on Court Suzanne Lenglen. This is the second time that the Romanian has been shocked by Lucic-Baroni in a Grand Slam event. The 70th-ranked Croatian also beat Halep at the U.S. Open last year.

The Kohlschreiber-Andujar match was suspended due to impending darkness in Paris. At the time of the delay, Kohlschreiber held a 1-6, 6-7, 6-3, 6-3, 4-2 lead.

Below, we've got results from the biggest matches, and full results can be found at the Roland Garros website.
