French Open results 2015: Roger Federer and Maria Sharapova advance

Elsewhere, Steve Johnson dropped three straight sets to Stan Wawrinka.

As expected, No. 2 ranked Roger Federer advanced in his match against Damir Dzumhur. Elsewhere, the United States are down to their last men’s singles participant after Steve Johnson went down in three straight sets.

Federer was predictably dominant on Court Philippe Chatrier Friday, going 6-4, 6-3 and 6-2 against the unranked Dzumhur. The victory keeps alive Federer’s bid for his 18th Grand Slam title. He last won a major in 2012 when he defeated Andy Murray at Wimbledon.

On the women’s side, No. 2 ranked Maria Sharapova took care of business against No. 26 ranked Samantha Stosur. The resourceful Sharapova has been battling a cold during the French Open, but it did not prevent her from winning in straight sets. The Russian will now take on No. 13 Lucie Safarova in the next round.

As for the United States, Johnson’s run finally came to an end Friday. The 25-year-old lost in three straight sets to No. 8 ranked Stan Wawrinka. The defeat eliminates the U.S. from the men’s singles bracket, though the country remains alive in the women’s singles and in the doubles brackets.
