French Open results 2015: Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal advance, will meet in quarterfinals

Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal will face off in the quarterfinals, Maria Sharapova took an early exit and more from Monday at the French Open.

We had more star power than usual in action on the ninth day at the 2015 French Open Monday, thanks to a Sunday rain delay that forced men’s No. 2 seed Roger Federer and women’s No. 2 seed Maria Sharapova, among others, into delayed matches. That meant those two, alongside Serena Williams, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal were all playing on Monday.

Not all of them survived the day without elimination, however. Sharapova fell to No. 13 seed Lucie Safarova in the opening match on Philippe-Chatrier Court. It was a close match, with Safarova relying on a tiebreak to take the first set, but she pushed herself into the quarterfinals in the end, winning 7-6(3), 6-4. Federer had a tough time with his opponent, No. 13 seed Gael Monfils, but he ultimately won his match in four sets, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1.

The other top seeds managed to push through, though it was not without incident. Williams was dominated in the first set against Sloane Stephens, and very narrowly took the second set before closing out strong, winning 1-6, 7-5, 6-3. Djokovic took down No. 20 seed Richard Gasquet without much issue, 6-1, 6-2, 6-3 while No. 6 seed Rafael Nadal actually dropped a set to unseeded American Jack Sock, winning 6-3, 6-1, 5-7, 6-2.

Sock isn’t an easy opponent by any means and has taken out some good players this tournament, but it’s got to give Djokovic some confidence heading into their quarterfinals matchup. Because Nadal is only the sixth seed (he wasn’t playing his best tennis coming into Roland Garros), he’s got a matchup with Djokovic up next. Nadal is the favorite to win given his dominance on the clay of Roland Garros, but if Djokovic ever had a chance to hand him his second loss ever there, this is probably it.

Women’s No. 4 seed Petra Kvitova also fell victim to the upset bug on Monday. No. 23 seed Timea Bacsinszky dropped the opening set but dominated Kvitova with a 6-0 second set, and closed it out to win, 2-6, 6-0, 6-3. She advanced to the quarterfinals, where she’ll play Alison Van Uytvanck.

Below, we’ve got the results from the most important matches, with full results at the Roland Garros website here.
