2015 Wimbledon scores and results: Novak Djokovic, Serena Williams advance in opening round

Most of the top-ranked players advanced on Monday, including No. 1 seeds Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams.

The top seeds survived the first day of the 2015 Wimbledon Championships largely intact. Men’s No. 1 seed Novak Djokovic cruised to a straight-set victory over Philipp Kohlschreiber from the main court, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4. Women’s top seed Serena Williams downed Margarita Gasparyan in similar fashion, 6-4, 6-1.

Djokovic is coming off a disappointing performance in the French Open, in which he came very close to earning his first title at Roland Garros, but ultimately fell short against Stan Wawrinka in the finals. Williams also made it to the finals in the French Open, but there she bested her opponent to win her 20th Grand Slam. and is obviously the favorite in this one.

Maria Sharapova, the No. 4 seed for the women, handled opponent Johanna Konta in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. Men’s No. 7 seed Milos Raonic needed four sets to get past his opening round opponent, Daniel Gimeno-Traver, winning 6-2, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(4). Men’s No. 5 seed Kei Nishikori struggled the most, needing all five sets to take down unseeded Simone Bolelli of Italy, 6-3, 6-7(4), 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.

The biggest upset of the day was when Jelena Ostapenko downed women’s No. 9 seed Carla Suarez Navarro, 6-2, 6-0. Navarro was the highest seed to fall on the first day. We almost saw a more significant upset when Alison Riske nearly eliminated No. 6 seed Lucie Safarova, but Safarova held on, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3. Safarova made it all the way to the finals of the French Open before losing to Williams.

The No. 2 and No. 3 seeds in both brackets will be in action on Tuesday. That includes Roger Federer, Andy Murray, Petra Kvitova and Simona Halep. Below, we've got the results from the opening day's seeded matchups (updated as they finish). For full results, go to the official Wimbledon website here.
