Serena Williams and Novak Djokovic dominated once again to move themselves into the third round at Wimbledon on Wednesday. Neither Williams nor Djokovic struggled to get past their second-round opponents. Djokovic dispatched Jarkko Nieminen, winning in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2, 6-3. Williams easily handled Timea Babos in her matchup, 6-4, 6-1.

The No. 1 seeds were as dominant as advertised on Wednesday, coasting into the third round.
That said, it wasn’t all easy for the top seeds. Men’s No. 9 seed Marin Cilic was pushed to the edge against Ricardas Berankis in his second-round matchup, going all five sets. But Cilic managed to hold on, taking the last set and a spot in the third round, 6-3, 4-6, 7-6(6), 4-6, 7-5.
Men’s No. 5 seed Kei Nishikori had to withdraw from the tournament due to a left calf injury, sending Santiago Giraldo into the third round. Nishikori had a rough five-set battle against Seimone Bolelli in the opening round, which aggravated the injury. The injury also forced Nishikori out of a match in Germany just two weeks prior.
On the women’s side, No. 11 seed Karolina Pliskova and No. 7 seed Ana Ivanovic both fell in their matches, losing to Coco Vandeweghe and Bethanie Mattek-Sands, respectively.
In good news for the top seeds, men’s No. 7 seed Milos Raonic downed Tommy Haas in four sets, 6-0, 6-2, 6-7(5), 7-6(4). No. 11 seed Grigor Dimitrov also bested his opponent, American Steve Johnson, this one in three sets, 7-6(8), 6-2, 7-6(2).
On the women’s side, No. 4 seed Maria Sharapova dominated her second-round opponent, Richel Hogenkamp, 6-3, 6-1. Top seed Serena Williams is facing Timea Babos in her second round matchup on Centre Court Wednesday.
With Nishikori out, the path into the semifinals gets easier for No. 10 seed Rafael Nadal. He’s not playing his best tennis of late, and was set to face Nishikori in the quarterfinals. He’s not a shoo-in for the semifinals at this stage, but his chances have certainly increased.
