A headlining matchup of sisters at Wimbledon ended quickly on Monday, with No. 1 Serena Williams knocking No. 16 Venus Williams out in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. After dropping the first set, Venus Williams held serve long enough to jump out to a 3-2 lead in the second set, but four straight games for Serena ended the match just 70 minutes after it began.

No. 1 Serena Williams was too much for her sister, No. 16 Venus Williams, defeating her in straight sets on Monday.
Next up for Serena Williams is a matchup against No. 23 Victoria Azarenka, whom she has faced 19 times before in her career. Azarenka won three of those 19 matches, but all three victories came on a hard court. She’ll have her hands full on Tuesday against Williams, although Azarenka hasn’t yet dropped a set at Wimbledon, including a 6-2, 6-3 victory over No. 30 Belinda Bencic.
The rest of the top-seeded women didn’t fare as well as Williams, though. No. 5 Carolina Wozniacki and No. 6 Lucie Safarova were both dispatched by unseeded opponents, Garbine Muguruza and Coco Vandeweghe, respectively. No. 4 Maria Sharapova beat Zarina Diyas on Monday, 6-4, 6-4, and joins Williams as the only other top 10 seed to survive the first four rounds.
Vandeweghe, who won 7-6, 7-6 over Safarova, is one of three U.S. women to advance to the quarterfinals, along with Williams and No. 21 Madison Keys, who beat Olga Govortsova, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1. Three Americans made the quarterfinals at the Australian Open in January, but it’s the first time that three have advanced to the quarterfinals at Wimbledon since 2004 (which featured Sharapova defeating Serena Williams in the final).
On the men’s side, No. 4 Stan Wawrinka advanced with a 7-6, 7-6, 6-4 win over No. 16 David Goffin that kept alive a potential rematch of the French Open final between Wawrinka and No. 1 Novak Djokovic. Both will have to first get through the quarterfinals on Wednesday and Djokovic will have to finish his Round of 16 match against Kevin Anderson on Tuesday. The match is currently in the fifth set.
No. 3 Andy Murray also advanced quickly with a 7-9, 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 win over No. 23 Ivo Karlovic. A potential semifinals matchup against No. 2 Roger Federer still exists. Federer took down No. 20 Roberto Bautista Agut on Monday to move on to the next round.
