2015 Wimbledon scores and results: Novak Djokovic advances, Stan Wawrinka out in quarterfinals

Djokovic, Roger Federer and Andy Murray all advanced to the semifinals at Wimbledon.

Susan Mullane-USA TODAY Sports

The men’s quarterfinals of this year’s Wimbledon tournament are in the books, and the top three seeds all survived intact. We’re getting close to the best possible semifinals we could possibly get this time around, with No. 1 seed Novak Djokovic, No. 2 seed Roger Federer and No. 3 seed Andy Murray all making it to the semifinals. Meanwhile, No. 4 seed Stan Wawrinka came close, but ultimately fell to No. 21 seed Richard Gasquet on Wednesday. Gasquet won that match, 6-4, 4-6, 3-6, 6-4, 11-9.

In the first match of the day, Murray downed his unseeded opponent, Vasek Pospisil, in straight sets, 6-4, 7-5, 6-4. Pospisil was a surprise this year, downing Viktor Troicki in five sets in the Round of 16 before the quarterfinals.

Murray proved to be too much for him, though. The Scot advances to the semifinals where he’ll meet Federer in a rematch of the 2012 Wimbledon final, as well as the Olympic final that same year, also staged at the All England Club. The two split those championships just a month apart, Federer winning the Grand Slam and Murray taking the Olympic gold medal. Similarly, Federer avoided much struggle in his matchup on Wednesday, downing men’s No. 12 seed Gilles Simon in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5, 6-2. Simon was coming off a dominant win over No. 6 seed Tomas Berdych, and also defeated Gael Monfils in the prior round.

Djokovic didn’t have any troubles getting through his opponent, Marin Cilic, on Wednesday. Cilic, the reigning U.S. Open champ, was the No. 9 seed, but Djokovic took a quick and painless straight-set match, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4. He’ll go on to the semifinals where he’ll face Gasquet. We came close to a rematch of the French Open final, but Gasquet stunned Wawrinka, just off his French Open victory, in five to eliminate that possibility.

Thursday will feature the women’s semifinals as No. 1 Serena Williams faces No. 4 Maria Sharapova, and No. 13 Agnieszka Radwanska faces No. 20 Garbine Muguruza. The men’s semifinals will take place on Friday. Below, the results from Wednesday’s matches.
