Both semifinals brackets for this year’s Wimbledon are now set, and on Thursday, four women will be narrowed down to two. The women’s bracket has been all over the place this tournament, with only two top 10 seeds making it into the semifinals. One of those women is the one who has been favored all along: top seed and world No. 1 Serena Williams.
Wimbledon 2015: Time, TV schedule, online streaming for Thursday’s matches
Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova, Agnieszka Radwanska and Garbine Mugurza will all be in action on Thursday.
She’ll be facing her toughest opponent of the tournament yet on Thursday, but it’s an opponent she’s historically dominated: No. 4 seed Maria Sharapova. This should be an intense match, given the fact that Williams and Sharapova are easily the top two women’s tennis players in the world over the past decade, but it’s been anything but given Williams’ absolute domination. Williams has won 16 consecutive matches against Sharapova, 13 of which have been decided in straight sets.
Victoria Azarenka, Williams’ quarterfinals opponent, typically gives the world No. 1 fits, and she did by taking the first set of their matchup. That may have been Sharapova’s best shot at a finals appearance. Now she’s facing Williams, who has a tendency to come from behind and absolutely annihilate her competition.
In the other semifinal, No. 13 seed Agnieszka Radwanska will be taking on No. 20 seed Garbine Muguruza. The last time Radwanska made a Wimbledon final, she was the world No. 2, and has been on a downward slope for some time now. But she’s been excellent in this year’s tournament, and should be favored over Muguruza for that, though Muguruza has won the last two matches between the two.
The women’s finals are set to get underway at 8 a.m. ET, with television coverage provided by ESPN. That coverage is set to run until 1 p.m., but it should go until both matches are complete. An online stream will be available at WatchESPN.
