2015 US Open bracket update: Serena Williams, Novak Djokovic advance past 1st round

Top seeds Serena Williams and Novak Djokovic advanced past the first round of the US Open. Kei Nishikori, the fourth seed, did not.

Robert Deutsch-USA TODAY Sports

Top seeds Serena Williams and Novak Djokovic blazed through their first-round opponents on the first day of the US Open Monday. Williams absolutely dominated Vitalia Diatchenko in her first set (6-0), and after Williams went up 2-0 in the second set Diatchenko retired from the match with an injury. Meanwhile, Djokovic wasn’t threatened once in his straight-set victory, dropping only three games in total against Joao Souza, 6-1, 6-1, 6-1. The second round will begin on Wednesday.

There was one massive upset on the men’s side as Japanese No. 4 seed Kei Nishikori fell to his unseeded first-round opponent, Benoit Paire. Nishikori dropped the opening set but looked in control after taking the next two, but he narrowly lost the fourth and Paire took the fifth without much issue, winning 6-4, 3-6, 4-6, 7-6(6), 6-4.

Nishikori was the runner-up in the US Open a year ago, and this is a huge blow to what was an impressive season thus far. Nishikori has achieved a career-best No. 4 ranking in singles, so this upset was completely unexpected. The man he lost to in the final last year, No. 9 seed Marin Cilic, downed his first-round opponent, Guido Pella, 6-3, 7-6(3), 7-6(3).

On the women’s side, there was another significant upset as Dominika Cibulkova downed No. 7 seed Ana Ivanovic in three sets, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. Ivanovic has played some rocky tennis of late, and Cibulkova is a dangerous opponent for anyone, so it wasn’t a massive upset.

Venus Williams made it through her first-round opponent, Monica Puig. Williams dropped the second set, but dominated the third to win the match, 6-4, 6-7(7), 6-3. No. 8 seed Karolina Pliskova dropped her match against Anna Tatishvili, 6-2, 6-1. No. 15 seed Agnieszka Radwanska was also victorious in her match, while No. 10 seed Carla Suarez Navarro lost hers. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (No. 19) and Jeremy Chardy (No. 27) were among the other seeded men who won their matches.
