2015 US Open bracket update: Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer cruise into final

Robert Deutsch-USA TODAY Sports

The Novak Djokovic train continued to roll with a domination of Marin Cilic on Friday to advance to the 2015 US Open men’s final, where he will face a determined and equally impressive Roger Federer on Sunday in a battle of the top two seeds.

Federer, the No. 2 seed, beat fellow countryman No. 5 Stan Wawrinka in the night cap, 6-4, 6-3, 6-1 in a match that only took 92 minutes. Federer improved to 17-3 all-time against Wawrinka, including 12-0 on hard courts. Federer closed the second set winning 13 straight points and 17 of the last 18 poins.

The top-seed Djokovic destroyed No. 9 Cilic, 6-0, 6-1, 6-2 in a match that took just 85 minutes, and has dropped just two sets in the entire tournament. It is the sixth US Open final for Djokovic, who won his only title at Flushing Meadows in 2011. He is 56-9 all-time at the US Open.

“This is the biggest, most special stadium we have,” Djokovic said after his semifinal win.

This has been a special year for Djokovic, who reached the final at all four grand slam tournaments in 2015. He won the Australian Open and Wimbledon, and lost to Stan Wawrinka at the French Open. Overall in 2015, Djokovic has reached 11 consecutive tournament finals.

Federer, a five-time US Open champion, reached his first final at Flushing Meadows since 2009. He is seeking his first grand slam tournament win since 2012, and his first US Open title since 2008. He has yet to drop a single set all tournament.

Federer leads the all-time series with Djokovic 21-20, though Djokovic is 7-6 against Federer in their meetings in grand slam tournaments. This will be their fourth meeting in a grand slam final, with Federer winning the 2007 US Open and Djokovic winning Wimbledon in 2014 and 2015.

The two have met in five finals in 2015, with Djokovic 3-2. Federer won their last head-to-head meeting, capturing the Cincinnati Masters three weeks ago with a straight-set victory.

Djokovic is in search of his 10th grand slam tournament title and on Sunday will play in his 18th major final match. Federer is the all-time men’s leader with 17 grand slam tournament wins, and Sunday will be his record 27th grand slam tournament final.

The US Open men’s final will be televised by ESPN on Sunday at 7 p.m. ET, with a preview beginning at 6:30 p.m. The match will be available to watch online via WatchESPN.
