2015 US Open bracket update: Donald Young wins marathon, advances to Round of 16

Anthony Gruppuso-USA TODAY Sports

The men’s bracket was loaded with straight-set wins for top-seeded players like Roger Federer, Andy Murray and Stan Wawrinka on Saturday, but the highlight match of the day was a thrilling five-set victory by unseeded American Donald Young.

Young dropped the first two sets to No. 22 seed Viktor Troicki out of Serbia, but then stormed back for a 4-6, 0-6, 7-6 (3), 6-2, 6-4 win in the third round. It was the second victory of the tournament in three rounds for the 25-year-old from Chicago that saw him win after dropping the first two sets.

Young advances to the Round of 16, where he will next battle Wawrinka, the fifth seed, a 6-3, 7-6 (5), 6-4 winner over Ruben Bemelmans of Belgium.

The No. 2 seed Federer beat No. 29 Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 in the third round on Saturday and has yet to drop a set in the tournament. Federer in the Round of 16 will battle No. 13 seed John Isner.

Murray, the No. 3 seed, dispatched No. 30 Thomaz Bellucci of Brazil, 6-3, 6-2, 7-5. Murray will face No. 15 Kevin Anderson in the Round of 16.

On the women’s side, No. 2 seed Simona Halep cruised to a 6-2, 6-3 win over Shelby Rogers on Saturday, a day that saw a couple of mild upsets.

No. 20 Victoria Azarenka beat No. 11 Angelique Kerber in three sets, and learned a new word in doing so. No. 22 seed Samantha Stosur defeated No. 16 Sara Errani in three sets. The No. 18 seed, Andrea Petkovic, also fell on Saturday, losing to Johanna Konta in straight sets.
