Petra Kvitova, a two-time Wimbledon champion and the No. 11 women’s tennis player in the world, was severely injured in a home invasion by a knife-wielding intruder in her native Czech Republic, according to reports.
Petra Kvitova severely injured in home invasion knife attack
The tennis star suffered injuries to her left hand, but is otherwise safe.

A defiant Kvitova described injuries to her left hand on social media shortly after the attack.
Per The Guardian, police in the Czech town of Prostejov say the man stole money from Kvitova’s home and remains at large.
Kvitova, 26, plays left-handed. She peaked at No. 2 in the world in late 2011 after winning Wimbledon that year, and was just one match away from the No. 1 ranking in 2012. She won a second Rosewater Dish in 2014 and has 17 WTA titles in her career. This summer, she won Olympic bronze by beating American Madison Keys. Hers was one of just 10 medals won by Czechs at the Games.
It is, of course, not immediately clear how much of the upcoming tennis season Kvitova will miss while recovering.
