2016 Wimbledon scores and results: Garbine Muguruza survives 1st-round scare; Novak Djokovic cruises

Garbine Muguruza survived an early scare at Wimbledon and came out on top in her first-round match against Camila Giorgi, 6-2, 5-7, 6-4. Muguruza, who won the French Open earlier this year, is trying to break the trend of first-time Grand Slam winners struggling in their next Slam appearance.

Muguruza looked frustrated and out of her element throughout the match, but especially so in the second set. She struggled with Giorgi’s serve for most of the match. With the set on serve and Muguruza serving, she missed a couple shots badly and clearly showed her frustration. Not many points after that, Giorgi took the second set by a score of 7-5, setting up a third and final set for the match.

After six break points and a 10-minute game, Muguruza finally broke Giorgi again in the first set when the Italian was serving at 1-1. She didn’t manage to break her again, but held serve through the remainder of the third set to ultimately win two sets to one.

Djokovic, on the other hand, had no troubles getting through his opening round opponent. Djokovic has been playing on a completely different level to everyone else in men’s tennis lately, and he dominated James Ward without issue on Monday, winning in straight sets, 6-0, 7-6(3), 6-4.

Muguruza won her first Grand Slam at the French Open weeks ago, but lost her only match since then on the grass courts of Mallorca. Of the last eight first-time Grand Slam winners, none have made it past the quarterfinals at the following Grand Slam event. Muguruza has a long way to go before she breaks that trend but she survived an early scare on Monday.

Venus Williams is into the second round after beating her opening round opponent, Donna Vekic, in straight sets, 7-6(3), 6-4. Her sister, Serena Williams, is the top seed in the tournament and will play her first-round match on Tuesday.

Some of the later seeds in the tournament struggled on its opening day, with all of No. 23 Ana Ivanovic, No. 25 Irina-Camelia Begu, No. 20 Kevin Anderson an No. 24 Philipp Kohlschreiber lost their matches on Monday. It was a surprising number of seeded players falling on the day, but not unheard of in a Grand Slam.

Of those players, Ivanovic was considered the most likely to do some damage in the tournament, but with her first-round exit it’s back to the drawing board for her.

Other high women’s seeds, like Madison Keys and Samantha Stosur, had no issues on Monday. Keys took down Laura Siegemund, 6-3, 6-1 while Stosur beat Magda Linette, 7-5, 6-3. On the men’s side, Marin Cilic, David Goffin and David Ferrer all made it past their opening-round matchups in straight sets and will go on to the second round.

Below are results from pertinent seeded matchups, to be updated throughout the day and with full singles results available here.
