In the first two rounds of the French Open, No. 2 seed Andy Murray was pushed to five sets and ultimately was on the court roughly five hours longer than he needed to be by the time he faced Novak Djokovic in the finals. If he is to challenge the Serb in Wimbledon, he’ll need to dispatch his early round opponents quickly, and that’s what he did on Tuesday, beating unseeded Liam Broady, 6-2, 6-3, 6-4.
2016 Wimbledon scores and results: Andy Murray, Serena Williams into 2nd round
Neither Murray nor Williams struggled with their opening round matches at Wimbledon on Tuesday.

Murray, who has one title at The Championships, looked ready to compete with anyone on Tuesday and easily handled the challenge brought upon by Broady. The other top seed in action Tuesday, Serena Williams, also made short work of her opening round opponent, Amra Sadikovic.
Williams is going for her 22nd Grand Slam title, which would tie Steffi Graf for the record. But she’s appeared in the last three Grand Slam finals and has lost every single one of them. She last won at Wimbledon last year, when she bested Garbine Muguruza in the finals. Muguruza most recently beat Williams in the finals of the French Open, and both women are into the second round after winning their openers, though Muguruza struggled with Camila Giorgi on Monday.
Tuesday saw plenty of action, with top seeds from both singles draws playing well and advancing, though the women’s draw got very little done in comparison due to a rain delay. Play was canceled with several matches not yet started due to the weather. On the women’s side, seven matches were postponed before ever beginning. No. 6 seed Roberta Vinci was among those who finished, and she was pushed to three sets against Alison Riske before winning, 6-2, 5-7, 6-3.
On the men’s side, No. 4 seed Stan Wawrinka took down Taylor Fritz in his opener, but he was pushed to four sets in the match. Wawrinka could meet Murray in the semifinals of this tournament but he’ll need to clean up his play in these early rounds. Richard Gasquet and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga both also won their matches, though Dominic Thiem, Tomas Berdych and Bernard Tomic were among those who had their matches postponed. Tomic’s match was stopped in the fourth set against tough opponent Fernando Verdasco.
