Almost all of Wimbledon’s action on Wednesday was wiped out due to the rain, a crushing blow to the tournament after several matches were rained out on the tournament’s second day as well. The Centre Court roof allowed some tennis to be played, meaning top seeds Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Agnieszka Radwanska got their matches in, but it wasn’t nearly enough as the tournament now has a massive backlog.
2016 Wimbledon results and scores: Novak Djokovic, Agnieszka Radwanska win on rained-out Wednesday
Some of the top seeds got their matches in on Centre Court, but play on the outer courts was almost entirely rained out at Wimbledon on Wednesday.
Radwanska, after having her match delayed on Tuesday, got in her match against Kateryna Kozlova and dominated her in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1. Radwanska is drawn into the same half as Serena Williams and is the top seed’s biggest competition before the finals, where she could meet Garbine Muguruza in a French Open finals rematch. Muguruza, who beat Williams in said finals, had her match rained out on Wednesday.
Djokovic made it through his second-round opponent, Adrian Mannarino, in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2, 7-6(5). Federer had similar success in his second-round match against Marcus Willis, winning 6-0, 6-3, 6-4. But after those, the finished matches were few and far between.
Men’s No. 8 seed Dominic Thiem got past Florian Mayer, 7-5, 6-4, 6-4, while No. 10 seed Tomas Berdych held off Ivan Dodig in four sets. No. 19 seed Bernard Tomic had a tough opening round opponent in Fernando Verdasco, but he managed to hang on and win that match in five sets, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.
Even fewer women’s matches were finished on Wednesday. After Radwanska, Petra Kvitovic, the No. 10 seed, was the highest seed to get through a match, taking out Sorana Cirstea, 6-0, 6-4. Johanna Konta and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova were among the other victorious women on the day.
